In cooperation with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, Team Greyhound Adoption of Ohio is working with several correctional facilities in the State of Ohio.  We started with our first dogs at the Lorain Correctional Facility in Grafton, Ohio in March of 2001.  We currently work with 5 facilities throughout the state of Ohio.  This type of program is not new for the State of Ohio, however, this is first training program in Ohio to involve retired racing greyhounds. While the dogs are at the facility they  each have a primary handler and a secondary handler.  Their job will be to teach the greyhounds socialization, general manners, and basic obedience skills. The goal is that when the dogs leave the program they will know how to walk nicely on a lead and obey the basic commands of sit, down, stay and come. Based on the willingness of the dog to learn,  more commands can be taught.  The dogs will be in training for a minimum of 90 days.

This type of foster and training program is a great opportunity for future greyhound adopters to adopt a greyhound who is already well mannered and trained in the basic commands. Our trainer at several of the facilities is Therese Backowski.  PLEASE NOTE: Various facilities have different levels of obedience training.  Please ask for more information on an individual facility.  This joint venture enables Team Greyhound Adoption of Ohio to receive a much needed source for foster care, while enabling us to help more greyhound dogs find loving and caring homes.  This program was modeled after a program in Kansas.  Our thanks to all of the people involved with The Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections that have been as excited about this program as we have been. A special thanks to the people involved with the TLC program in Kansas who were very helpful and provided a lot of insight into the smooth development of this program. But most of all, thanks to the handlers who are willing to give so much to these wonderful majestic greyhounds.

When the first two dogs were placed on March 23, 2001 it was a wonderful experience to see the love and compassion that the handlers had for these two beautiful greyhounds. The greyhound magic was working and it was evident that this was a great opportunity for these handlers to feel positive about themselves while doing something to create a positive contribution to society.

On October 28, 2004 a presentation was held for outside volunteers at ORW, the woman's correctional facility.  The following is a letter presented to us by one of the inmates.  While we know these inmates have done wrong within society, we can see the rehabilitative effects of working with these wonderful greyhounds.  Another Chance at Life

The trainers and handlers care very deeply for the dogs they have worked with.  They would love to have updates on their dogs after they have been "paroled".  If you have adopted a dog that was trained through one of the following facilities, please write to the trainer/handler and update him/her on how your dog is doing. Be sure to include the name of the facility where your dog was trained, the name of the handler/s who trained your dog, the dog's name while in prison (in the event you changed his/her name).  Please DO NOT include any personal information, and only send photos of your dog, not friends or family members.
